Why Does My Heel Hurt When I Get Out of Bed?

by | May 3, 2024 | Uncategorized

Plantar heel pain is a common issue that can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. For most people with this condition, the pain is at its worst when taking their first steps in the morning. Some people describe it as feeling like they’re walking on glass. But why does this happen?
When tissues such as the plantar fascia and tendons become irritated or injured, they tend to stiffen up while we’re resting. Since the longest period most of us spend off our feet is during sleep, these tissues can become quite stiff overnight. While we don’t know the exact reason, a logical explanation for worse morning pain is that suddenly applying pressure to these stiff tissues makes it difficult for them to function normally, causing discomfort until they warm up and regain flexibility.

If you’re all too familiar with that nagging plantar heel pain first thing in the morning, you’re not alone. The good news is there are effective strategies to manage this condition and get long-lasting relief.
